The University of Alabama Press seeks an experienced Project Editor to join the editorial department.

Required minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree, preferably in the humanities or social sciences, and at least two (2) years of experience in publishing. An internship at a publishing house or research or teaching support within a university environment may be counted toward years of experience.


Required skills and knowledge:
• Extensive knowledge of the rules of the English language as well as strong competence in editing scholarly material
• Demonstrated knowledge of grammar, spelling, and usage
• Working knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style and familiarity of other various book-publishing style manuals is preferred
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Word and Outlook)
• Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (particularly Acrobat and InDesign)
• Technological savvy, including the ability to learn and adapt to new developments and train others in their use
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines is essential
• Strong organization skills
• Keen attention to details
• Ability to set priorities, work independently, and maintain tight schedules, including occasional work during evenings, weekends, and university breaks as needed
• Mac OS proficient
• Database management
• Effective written and oral communications

Preferred Qualifications:
Masters or other advanced degree in the humanities or social sciences
• Proven competence in editing across multiple academic disciplines
• Rich intellectual knowledge and a strong scholarly background
• Fluent with the comment and markup feature in Adobe Acrobat
• Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign
• Familiarity with ebook technologies
